DIY: Gratitude Tree

Happiness + Gratitude, Style + DIY

We are almost halfway through our gratitude challenge and it’s been a lot of fun! I’m glad to see so many of you on our social media accounts joining in! Be sure to check out our facebook and IG to see what’s going on!

On theme with our gratitude challenge we made a gratitude tree, to keep track of all the things we are grateful for! We put a little twist on ours though! On one side of the wood slice is written what we are grateful for and on the other side is a motivational message!

I’m going to be honest here, although I LOVED the idea, I wasn’t thrilled with the final product (at first!). However, when my three year old Parker’s eyes lit up and he fell in love with our new tree, I knew it was going to stay. For someone reason, when he looked at it the way he did, I was able to see it in a different light. That’s kind of how changing your perception works. You can look at something (a negative situation) one way but if you just change the way your looking at it, you can see it through new eyes and realize all of the wonderful things about it!

Now I couldn’t imagine walking into my kitchen without our gratitude tree! Pictures don’t do it justice, at all! It fills the space with so much love and joy, it almost radiates! And I believe it’s all the wonderful energy behind it and all the love that was put into making it.

To make your own gratitude tree you’ll need:

  1. A vase (ours was from my wedding but here’s a similar one)
  2. Gathered twigs
  3. Chalkboard paint
  4. Vase filler (rocks or sand work)
  5. Chalk pen
  6. Twine
  7. Stickers (optional)
  8. Small Wood Slices

Take your vase and fill it up with your filler half way, then arrange your twigs (make sure they are strong enough for your wood slices to hang! I’ve found the closet together your arrange the twigs the better, kind of in a bundle in the middle of the vase. Then fill the rest of the way with your rocks or sand to hold the twigs in place.

Next prepare your wood slices, paint or spray your chalkboard paint on. It’s optional but to make them perfectly round use a stencil. After they are dry, drill a small hole in the top and string through your twine to make your ornament.

Next write what you are grateful for on one side and if you want, place your sticker on the back. Hang your ornaments and voila! You have yourself a gratitude tree that will keep you motivated!

By putting your tree somewhere you will see it often, your more likely to feel grateful multiple times through out the day! It’s a great reminder! It’s like when I see it I can help but feel happy😊

DIY Succulent Pumpkin Arrangements: 3 Ways

Style + DIY

I recently got married back in September and I used succulents in these beautiful terrariums from Target. as my center pieces. Although I love them, I don’t really have the space to display them all nicely in my home. So I thought what better way than to reuse the succulents in this awesome DIY succulent pumpkin arrangement!

Beautiful Succulent Terrarium Center Pieces for a Wedding

This project was so easy and turns out so cute! Perfect for kids and adults to make their own succulent arrangements! How fun would it be to have a succulent pumpkin making party!

The thing I love most about succulents is that they’re very hearty, easy to rearrange and relatively inexpensive. So you can purchase one or two succulents and grow new ones from the original plants to have a larger quantity.

For my pumpkin arrangement I chose a smaller sized pumpkin but you are free to choose whatever size you’d like. Just make sure you have enough succulents and fillings to fill in the whole arrangement without gaps.

I’m going to show you three different versions, starting with the simplest first.

Cute Succulent Pumpkin Arrangement

I completed the first version in under 20 minutes. So it’s super easy!

1. Cut the top off your pumpkin, then scoop out all the insides, really good!

2. Fill your empty pumpkin half full of sand or potting soil.

3. Pick out your succulents, take them out of their original containers and shake off some of the excess dirt but not all of it.

4. Arrange your succulents how you want them to look in your pumpkin and then you can fill in the gaps with little rocks, moss or even small trinkets! You decide 😊

I think the arrangement looks absolutely adorable just how it is. If you like the look, you can stop right there!

However, I decided to paint my pumpkin white and paint a little face on it as if the succulents were it’s hair! Half way through the process though, I decided I would share how it looked painted all white!

Adorable and Chic Succulent Pumpkin Arrangement.

This is the second version and I think it looks super chic! So you may decide to stop at this step and it will still look great!

Adorable and Chic Succulent Pumpkin Arrangement I used this white, acrylic paint from Hand Made Modern, in a satin finish! I really love this brand and have used it for many projects. You can purchase it at target, but any brand of paint will do!

However, I will make the suggestion that if you know that you want to paint your pumpkin and that you’re not going to keep it in its natural state, I would recommend painting your pumpkin first and letting it dry before arranging your succulents in it. When using paint you will probably have to do 2-3 coats. However if you want a quicker process, white spray paint will work just as well and give you a smoother finish.

Cute Little Face Painted on a Succulent Pumpkin Arrangement

For the third version, this is where all the fun happens! You can choose to paint whatever you’d like on your pumpkin! This is really fun for kids (and kids at heart) to customize their pumpkins! I decided to paint a cute little ladies face on mine.

I’d love for you to share with us what pumpkins your making this season in the comments below!!

So much Fall fun!

DIY: Paint + Etch Pumpkins

Happiness + Gratitude, Style + DIY

Happy Fall! That time of year is here again when you get to wear sweaters, have bonfires, and decorate with pumpkins! Now there is the usual pumpkin carving, but this year we decided to do something a little different. We took the kids to the local farmers market down the road and let them help us pick out a few pumpkins. We also left some love letters which you can read more about here.

When we got the pumpkins home we started our decorating festivities! For this year’s pumpkins we used paint. I will share with you how I went about decorating my pumpkins.

The list of items I used to decorate were:

  • Two pumpkins
  • Spray paint (white and brown)
  • Carving tools

For my first look I sprayed my entire pumpkin white. Then I let it sit out to dry completely. The next part is where your creativity comes into play. I decided to do some dandelion type flowers on my pumpkin, but you could really do any scene that pleases your heart. I took my carving tools (which happened to be some fix a flat tire tools my husband had in the garage) and I dug out a circle along with some petals all around the edge of the circle. I then dug a long stem.

I did these flowers all around the pumpkin, some shorter some longer. You don’t want to dig all the way through the pumpkin, just enough to let the orange peep through. That’s it, so simple yet such a fresh new way to spruce those pumpkins up!

My second pumpkin I spray painted a metallic brown. After it dried I drew an S on it for our family’s name and carved the S out; again just enough to let the orange peek through.

This one is short and sweet but these two pumpkins together give our front porch just the fall touch it needed.

What ways do you decorate your fall pumpkins?
